Half-Mile, Upwind, On Foot (Film Screening)

Scene from Half-Mile film shows wooden cross with folks sitting and gathered around in a rural settingThe Penn State Berks Sustainability Team presented a film screening of Half-Mile, Upwind, On Foot on Friday, April 19, 2019 at 12:15 pm in the Perkins Auditorium at Penn State Berks. The event, featuring a presentation and discussion after the film by Karen Feridun, founder of Berks Gas Truth, was free and open to the public.

Half-Mile, Upwind, On Foot tells the story of communities that are working to bring a halt to the current construction of some pipelines in Pennsylvania that prove to be dangerous, disruptive, and unnecessary.

River Blue (Film Screening)

Narrated by Jason PriestleyThe Penn State Berks Sustainability Team hosted a screening of RiverBlue on Monday, April 8, 2019 at 6 pm in the Perkins Multipurpose Room at the campus. The event was free and open to the public. In an effort to reduce solid and food waste, the Team chose not to serve refreshments.

RiverBlue follows international river conservationist, Mark Angelo, spanning the globe to infiltrate one of the world’s most pollutive industries, fashion. Narrated by clean water supporter Jason Priestley, this groundbreaking documentary examines the destruction of our rivers, its effect on humanity, and the solutions that inspire hope for a sustainable future.

An emotional race against timeThe Penn State Berks Sustainability Team hosted a film screening of Chasing Coral on Monday March 25, 2019 at 6 pm in room 101 of the Franco Building at Penn State Berks. The event was free and open to the public. In an effort to reduce solid waste and food waste, the Team chose not to serve refreshments.

Coral reefs around the world are vanishing at an unprecedented rate. A team of divers, photographers and scientists set out on a thrilling ocean adventure to discover why and to reveal the underwater mystery to the world. The Hollywood Reporter calls it “a superbly crafted documentary. Powerfully Persuasive.” The New York Times calls it “an emotional, race-against-time.”

What Lies Upstream (Film Screening)

Promotional image from What Lies UpstreamThe Penn State Berks Sustainability Team along with the Kittatinny Sierra Club sponsored a screening of What Lies Upstream on Friday November 9, 2018 in room 5 of the Luerssen Building at the campus. A reception at 6:30 pm was followed by the screening at 7 pm. The event was free and open to the public.

Penn State Berks students participated in a citizen scientist project sponsored by the Sierra Club Wastewater Residuals Grassroots Network (WR-GN). Panelists discussed the project, student findings about what lies upstream and downstream along our Berks County portion of the Schuylkill River, and our role in water quality.

Participating Penn State Berks Citizen Scientists were CJ Carty, Myles Chikuni, Brooke Eveland, Jamie Greenwood, Kellen Redcay, Daniel Samolewicz, Ashley Straka, and Aarchi Talati.

Panelists included Dr. Mahsa Kazempour and Dr. Jayne Park-Martinez from Penn State Berks, along with Darree Sicher, Rachel Rosenfeld, and Jonathan Day from Kittatinny Sierra Club.

 

EarthFest 2018

EarthFest 2018 was celebrated on April 18th, 2018 at Penn State Berks. Through a variety of stations with interactive activities, students, faculty and staff were able to learn about Sustainability and how they can do their part for the environment.

Guest Speaker : Dominic Frongillo

    Dominic Frongillo presents on "Sustainability in Action Locally to Globally : Creating Green Communities for All" at Penn State Berks

Dominic Frongillo made history at age 22 by becoming the youngest person ever to serve on the Town Council in Caroline, New York. Elected to his second term in 2010, Frongillo also served as one of the youngest deputy town supervisors in New York State. Frongillo is a five-time delegate to the United Nations, traveling to climate negotiations in Indonesia, Denmark, Mexico, and South Africa. In Copenhagen, Frongillo coordinated and delivered a statement from over 100 young elected officials from 30 U.S. states calling on President Obama and Congress to renew America’s leadership in clean energy. Film Screening : Triple Divide

Berks Sustainability Team invites you to the film screening of : Triple Divide Bullfrog Films presents Triple Divide Redacted - fracking equipment

This award-winning “Bombshell” documentary covers the impact of fracking in one of the country’s most pristine watersheds. With exclusive interviews from oil and gas industry leaders, independent experts and impacted residents, “Triple Divide (Redacted)” covers five years (2011-2016) of cradle-to-grave investigations that reveal how regulators and industry keep water contamination covered up.

The film screening will be followed by a discussion led by guest speaker, Karen Feridun, founder of Berks Gas Truth and member of Steering Committee of PA Against Fracking. The event is free and open to the public.

Earth Fest 2017

The Perkins Plaza and lawn was the setting for Penn State Berks’ Earth Fest 2017 on April 19, 2017 from 10 am – 2 pm. The campus Sustainability Team hosted the event which included fun and educational activities, engaging and informative demonstrations, information stations and opportunities to win prizes. Stations and activities were led by organizations, clubs, individuals, and community groups.
