Sustainability TeamAre you interested in climate change, pollution, waste pollution, environmental injustice, and ways to deal with these issues? Would you like to work collaboratively with others to learn, raise awareness, and take action? Looking for an opportunity to make a positive difference on campus and in the community? Join our Sustainability Team. It’s open to faculty, staff, students, and alumni. Our goal is to inform, engage, inspire, and empower ourselves, the campus community and the community at large. We strive to be active and socially responsible citizens of planet Earth.

The Sustainability Team at Penn State Berks was formed in spring 2015 when a group of faculty, staff, and students joined forces to create a group devoted to sustainability efforts. Since then, the Sustainability Team has grown in numbers to include a very active, dedicated team of individuals who meet regularly to plan, organize, and promote sustainability events and educational opportunities for the campus and the larger community. Faculty, staff, and students meet regularly throughout the academic year and pool their talents to develop initiatives supporting education and action in support of the University’s sustainability mission.

The team plans year-round events which are open to the community such as film screenings and panel discussions, tours of the campus’ honeybee gardens and sustainable structures, Earth Week celebrations, educational displays, student-developed educational videos, and the Earth Fest. The Team has also partnered with and invited local community members and organizations to the events–an additional source of the Team’s success.

Major initiatives for the team have included promoting waste reduction on campus, creating educational videos, and publishing a sustainability newsletter. The team partners with community organizations such as the Berks County Department of Agriculture, the Reading Regional Food Policy Action Council, Kittatanny Sierra Club, Nolde Environmental Education Center, and local organic farmers.

Our goal is to INFORM, ENGAGE, INSPIRE, and EMPOWER ourselves, the campus community and the community at large to be ENGAGED & SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE citizens of planet Earth.

University’s Sustainability Mission: A comprehensive integration of sustainability into the University’s research, teaching, outreach and operations that prepares students, faculty, and staff to be sustainability leaders in their professional, personal, and civic lives.
